Why Aren’t You Making More Money With Your Apps?


By now, you’ve probably heard one of the crazy success stories from the App Store.

Cinderella stories about the acquisitions of apps like Instagram (~$715 million), Draw Something (~$200 million), and Summly (~$30 million) make headlines, and Candy Crush Saga’s earnings—anywhere from $633,000 to $850,000 per day—make the App Store seem like an enchanted jungle where money grows on trees.

More iPhones are sold every day than people are born in the world, and Apple has only a 13% share of the market. Android shipped 211 million devices in the third quarter of 2013.


Most amazing of all is that people with no background in programming or software development are creating mobile apps and earning significant incomes.

The App Store now offers over 1.6 million apps from 500,000 developers. Only 75 of those developers, including King (Candy Crush Saga) and Super Cell (Clash of Clans and Hay Day), make 50% of the revenue—approximately $60,000,000 per month.

    I just bought the guide but flipping through the resources, it looks fantastic!

    I can tell right now that the Cheat Sheet and App Services Master List will be VERY useful. I’ve been collecting resources of my own but to have a list of tools and groups online organized by category is much better than my own!

    The interviews and templates are also priceless as well.

    I think the guide alone will be worth the price I paid for the complete package. I’ll see if that’s true in a few months time after I’ve read and implemented the tips and tricks mentioned in the guide but I have a strong feeling it will be.

    I love the ninja tip on page 36, on how to search for similar projects on Odesk by typing in “type of app, oDesk.” I always have this little voice in the back of my head asking whether I got stiffed on the costs of development. Nevermore with this little ditty. Thanks a bunch. The guide is full of awesome tips, wish I had this when I had just got started.

    I have heard that a good strategy to do is release your app as paid ($2.99+) and then after a couple weeks, drop it to free. There are websites that monitor price changes like this and would get your app listed there. Also I heard that when you upload your app to iTunes connect, you should set it 6+ months in advance. Then when it is approved, set it to release 48 hours from then. This is because there are other countries that are “further in time” than your time zone, so it will make sure that your app gets released exactly at midnight, their time as a new app.

    Personally, I think the most important aspect is to nail your icon, screenshots and keywords. Play around with these variables to make sure you get maximum effect. Heres to a successful 2014!

    Ijust had to come back and say that I loved the ending!
    And it’s a great guide. A lot of simple, free or cheap, and easy tricks. No “get-downloads-quickly and make more moeny ” BS.

    I would love an ePub and mobi version for on the go. PDFs are generally horrible on mobile devices and most apps with sync don’t accept them as they’re not considered “ebooks”.
